Art Matters

On Tuesday, March 4, 2008 more than 50 City officials, artists and business people came together at the John F. Kennedy Library in Vallejo CA for an all-day conference to brainstorm creative ideas for the integration of art and community to improve Vallejo.

The conference was emceed by Vallejo Artists Guild President Harold Beaulieu and kicked off with an inspiring presentation by Vallejo Councilwoman Joanne Shivley who quoted author Wayne Dwyer saying,

"When you change the way
you look at things,
the things you look at change."

Joanne's optimistic talk was followed by the following presentations:

Suzanne Schweitzer, Administrative Analyst, Community Development

Economic Opportunities for Artists
Steve England, Real Property and Assets Manager, Economic Development

Graffiti, Illegal Art and Illegal Dumping

Tony Pearsall, Retired, Vallejo Police Department
Nimat Shakoor-Grantham, Code Enforcement


Creative Opportunities in Transit
Crystal Odum Ford, Transportation Superintendent

After School Art Programs
Harold Beaulieu, President of Vallejo Artists' Guild


The afternoon was spent at round tables brainstorming ideas for several issues facing the community, prepared by the Guild covering Opportunities and Potential Policy Directions, Support for Community Organizations, Diversity and Identity, and Revitalization and Economic Development.
